What to expect in the editing room...
This is an exciting new addition to the word writers events. It is a cross between a mentoring or writing intensive opportunity and a writer retreat room. The idea is you bring your manuscript along with you during these times, your laptop and materials in hand, and write with the help of the editor when needed. Some of the editors are even willing to preread a few pages (up to 20) to give you comments at the start of the session where you can work with them. If you plan to take this opportunity ensure you email in advance to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your details and manuscript and time slot. On the other hand you do not have to do this to use this opportunity. It is aimed at being an opportunity to work with an editor without the usual price tag you would have to ask them questions, look at parts of your whole work or small works and get feedback. We hope you enjoy it!
The Word Writers fair was first run in 2009 in Inala, Qld. It was organised by Rochelle Manners of Wombat Books to provide an opportunity for Australian Christian authors to connect and network, learn and inspire one another. The first year was a fairly simple event, but was positive and successful! Attending authors included Andrew Lansdown, poet and fantasy author from Western Australia, Paula Vince, fiction author from South Australia, Sarah Rowan Dahl, Sydney illustrator/artist, and a number of Brisbane authors including Anne Hamilton, Lyn Hurry, Jan Dyer and many more.
2010 saw the location being moved to Capalaba and a much larger line up of authors. Many interstate and international authors attended including Meredith Resce (SA), Jo-Anne Berthelsen (NSW), Rosie Boom (New Zealand) and the announcement of the first CALEB prizes through Omega Writers were held the night of the fair, making the trip extra worthwhile for all involved. The weekend grew to include the evening before "Meet and Greet" book launches and social networking of authors and their family and friends attending the event.
2011 has been our biggest year yet with the addition of Sunday masterclasses. Many of the same authors were back, with extras like Paul Clark (QLD), and other repeat visitors such as Aleesah Darlison (NSW), Mary and Ray Hawkins (TAS). All of our authors have been a great blessing to attendees with feedback such as "each year gets better and better", "I love the networking", "great workshops, we just need more food".
So to ensure extra networking time, extra food and a place to sleep without having to go anywhere we have decided to take on a different format this year. "The Word Writers Getaway!" Find out more soon!
Book launches, meet authors, writing workshops, connecting writers, that's what it is about!
For too long Christian writers (and Australian writers in general) have been writing alone, not connecting and not meeting other writers. We believe we need to connect. Lets join together, explore our writing, and develop our skill.
In a time where Australian writing is being tried, lets not give in! Support the writers who are attending, meet them and learn more for yourself!
